Healing from Heartbreak and Finding Love Again

Updated: Apr 8, 2025

When my over 20-year marriage suddenly fell apart, I was shattered.

I couldn’t sleep.

I couldn’t eat.

I couldn’t think straight.

I was in complete shock — like the life I had built, the future I thought I was heading toward, had been ripped away overnight.

And then came the emotions.

They didn’t trickle in. They hit like a tidal wave.

I felt stupid.

I felt angry.

I felt utterly worthless.

And underneath all of it... I felt ashamed.

Ashamed that I hadn’t seen it coming.

Ashamed that I was suddenly alone after over two decades of being “us.”

No one tells you how disorienting heartbreak is — especially when it comes after decades of building a life with someone. It’s not just the loss of a relationship.

It’s the loss of identity.

The loss of routine.

The loss of who you were in that partnership.

The Silver Lining of My Heartbreak

Healing wasn’t pretty.

It wasn’t quick.

It wasn’t Instagrammable.

There were days I felt okay. Hopeful, even.

And then there were days I cried on the kitchen floor, wondering how I’d ever feel like me again.

Grief is not linear.

One day you feel like you’ve turned a corner, the next you're knee-deep in old memories and second-guessing everything.

But the silver lining of being so broken, you are open. Open to discovering you again.

One journal entry at a time —writing my way back to the woman I was before I forgot her.

This journey also helped me discover a new purpose in my professional life. I’ve been a designer for over twenty years, and what’s always been close to my heart is supporting my clients in meaningful ways. That part hasn’t changed—but now, I’ve fallen in love with helping people find love again.

Rebuilding Starts With a Decision

There were two promises I made to myself, that changed everything:

  1. I will not let this make me bitter.

  2. I will show my boys that we can heal from hard things.

I didn’t want my pain to harden me.

I wanted it to shape me, to grow me, to reveal something deeper.

So I started asking the questions I had avoided for years:

Who am I now, outside of that marriage?

What do I need?

What do I want love to feel like moving forward?

It was scary. But also, freeing.

For the first time in a long time, I had the space to choose me.

And slowly, I began to realize:

This heartbreak didn’t destroy me.

It reintroduced me — to my strength, my voice, and my worth.

Yes, Love Is Possible — Even Better Than Before

It took me a full year to even consider dating again.

I didn’t rush.

I didn’t force it.

But even in the thick of heartbreak, I had a deep knowing:

I will love again.

Not because I needed someone to fix me.

Not because I was afraid to be alone.

But because I knew I would heal — and once I did, I would choose love from a place of clarity and self-respect.

And let me tell you something beautiful:

I did find love again.

But more importantly, I found me again.

And that changed everything.

Now, I love with eyes and heart wide open.

I love myself fully.

I know what is right for me.

If You're in the Middle of It Right Now…

I see you.

I’ve been there and my heart goes out to you.

And I promise — you won’t always feel this way.

You're allowed to grieve.

You're allowed to be angry, lost, confused.

You're allowed to take your time.

But please know this:

You are also allowed to hope.

You are allowed to believe that something beautiful is still ahead.

Because no matter how broken you feel right now,

No matter how long you’ve been hurting —

✨ It’s never too late to heal.

✨ It’s never too late to love again.

✨ And it’s never too late to come home to yourself.

With love and so much belief in you,

Eija
